Polly's diary of "The Voice"
Dear Diary,
Wasn't today a tremendous day, quite as well frightening but very eventful? After leaving our own world, we went of course to the woods between the worlds, and it was, as always very peaceful and the queen was starting to weaken again. When Strawberry stepped into a pool, so I shouted, "Quick the greens!" and we found that the whole party had come with. After going down for a ways, Digory and I relized that we were standing. Digory said, "Maybe we are back in Charn just durring the night." Then a harsh, cold voice said," It's not Charn, it's nothing." It was the Witch. She was right. It was nothing. No stars, no moon, no light. Nothing. And the feeling of having nothing around you and being the only living thing in this world is frightful. It gives you the chills running up and down your back. It seemed as if maybe even the Witch with her great powers was even a little bit well, shocked. Then in a moment you could here a magnificent voice singing. It started sounding like a lullaby. Slow and peaceful. But then it grew louder keeping it's peacful sound but as if in rhythm, stars, constellations, and light started to apear. Then a light wind washed over us. Cabby, Digory and I stood jaws dropped in amazement. A sun started comming out. But it felt much younger than our sun, though giving off a warmer light. At every moment The Voice kept on singing. Soon enough there was enough light to see each others faces. Everybody should be amazed by this beautiful sound, but Mr. Ketterly and the Witch were not.
Mr. Ketterley was amazed, but I am sure that it wasn't in delight. He seemed very fascinated by the song yet maybe offended. He was so shaky that he looked as if he would fall over right then and there. Near by him stood the Witch who looked very serious as if nothing interesting was going on and yet you could tell that she did not like the song at all. The Voice kept on singing and making nature with it's rhythm. Soon there were hills, grass, and trees everywhere! The entire world was lightened up by this song. It was very calming untill you saw the singer it's self. It was a Lion. The Witch picked up the lamp post that she still had and threw it right at the lion wich was comming directly towards us and it hit him square in between his eyes then bounced of as if a balloon. The Witch was teriffied and ran off to hide in the forest of trees. Mr. Ketterley horrified by lion stayed close to the kids trying to steel there rings o get out of what he calls a terrible place
